Hello everyone, I am Duan Yali from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of TCM. There is a saying in TCM: "When the meridians are blocked, a hundred diseases arise." The twelve meridians in the human body are like the main roads in a city—when the roads are clear, Qi and blood flow smoothly; when they are blocked, aches and discomforts appear everywhere.
Today, I have compiled the twelve meridians into an easy-to-remember mnemonic, paired with simple daily maintenance tips. Follow these, and you won't need to rely on others for your health.
First, memorize this mnemonic for the meridian flow:
1. The twelve meridians of Yin and Yang, interior and exterior, circulate in an orderly path.
2. The three Hand Yin meridians run from the chest to the hand, and the three Hand Yang meridians run from the hand to the head.
3. The three Foot Yang meridians run from the head to the foot, and the three Foot Yin meridians run from the foot to the chest.
Let's go through the twelve meridians one by one.
1. Prone to colds—Pat the Lung meridian.
The lungs govern the skin and hair. When lung Qi is weak, you catch colds, get stuffy noses, and cough at the slightest breeze.
👉 Gently pat along the inner side of the arm from the shoulder toward the thumb 50 times, focusing on the subclavicular fossa. Drink a cup of ginger-jujube tea in the morning.
2. Poor bowel health—Rub the Large Intestine meridian.
The large intestine governs detoxification. When the bowels are clear, your face stays clean and free of acne.
👉 Push and rub from the index finger along the outer side of the arm toward the shoulder, and press the Hegu point. Drink a cup of warm salt water in the morning and rub your abdomen clockwise for 3 minutes.
3. Poor digestion—Tap the Stomach meridian.
The stomach is the "food bag." When the Stomach meridian is clear, the food you eat can be transformed into Qi and blood.
👉 Gently tap along the outer sides of both legs, focusing on the point 3 cun below the knee. Take a 10-minute slow walk after meals and avoid cold drinks.
4. Always tired—Find the Spleen meridian.
The spleen governs transportation and transformation. People with spleen deficiency feel weak all day and have a sallow complexion.
👉 Moxibustion on the point 3 cun above the tip of the medial malleolus and above the inner side of the knee. Eat more millet and Chinese yam, and don't stay up late.
5. Heart palpitations and insomnia—Press the Heart meridian.
The heart governs the spirit. When heart fire is excessive, you can't sleep; when heart Qi is insufficient, you feel chest tightness and palpitations.
👉 Gently rub along the inner side of the arm from the axilla toward the little finger, focusing on the point on the wrist crease on the side of the little finger. Sit quietly for 5 minutes in the afternoon and drink some lotus seed and lily bulb porridge.
6. Poor absorption—Regulate the Small Intestine meridian.
The small intestine is responsible for separating nutrients from waste. If it goes on strike, whatever you eat goes to waste.
👉 Perform Gua Sha from the little finger along the back of the arm toward the shoulder. Chew two or three slices of vinegar-soaked ginger after meals.
7. Stiff shoulders, neck, and back—Clear the Bladder meridian.
The Bladder meridian runs along the entire back and is the main channel for the body's Yang energy. When it is blocked, you get stiff shoulders and neck, and a cold back.
👉 Use an herbal mugwort pack to apply heat to the back, pat gently from top to bottom, and focus on the midpoint of the popliteal fossa behind the knee. Stand against a wall for 5 minutes every day.
8. Lack of energy—Tonify the Kidney meridian.
The kidneys are the "foundation of innate life." People with insufficient kidney Qi suffer from hair loss, tinnitus, and a lack of energy for anything.
👉 Rub the soles of your feet until warm every night, and press the depression in the front part of the sole 100 times. Eat more black beans and black sesame seeds.
9. Poor sleep—Rub the Pericardium meridian.
The pericardium is the "bodyguard" of the heart. When it is blocked, people become prone to anxiety and frequent dreaming.
👉 Push and rub from the outer side of the nipple along the midline of the arm toward the middle finger, focusing on the point 2 cun above the wrist crease. Soak your feet in warm water before bed and rub your palms together to warm them before covering your eyes.
10. Strange ailments—Regulate the Triple Burner meridian.
The Triple Burner governs the body's fluids and Qi mechanism. When it is in disorder, edema, poor metabolism, and various minor ailments arise.
👉 Gently pat from the ring finger along the back of the arm toward the shoulder. Drink some "Three Flower Tea" (rose, chrysanthemum, and jasmine).
11. Poor metabolism—Tap the Gallbladder meridian.
The gallbladder meridian governs the discharge of turbidity. When it is blocked, you may experience a bitter taste in the mouth, migraines, and dull skin.
👉 Use a hollow fist to tap along the midline of the outer thigh from the hip toward the knee 100 times. Drink a cup of lemon honey water in the morning.
12. Poor mood—Push the Liver meridian.
The liver governs the smooth flow of Qi. Those with liver stagnation suffer from low mood and chest tightness; women may also experience breast tenderness and irregular menstruation.
👉 Push and rub from the base of the thigh toward the inner side of the knee 50 times, focusing on the point between the first and second metatarsals on the dorsum of the foot. Drink some rose and dried tangerine peel tea, and sit quietly for 10 minutes before bed.
One last word of advice:
Meridian health maintenance is not difficult; the difficulty lies in consistency. Spend a few minutes patting and tapping every day, combined with good sleep and diet, and your body will naturally reward you.
